Abstract
This document contains the transcripts from a forum of the Indigenous Offender Health Research Capacity Building Group convened at the Australian National University in August 2012. The primary purpose of the forum was to 1) learn about Justice Reinvestment (JR), 2) gain a shared understanding of how it might be implemented in an Australian context, and 3) consider how research could demonstrate its effectiveness. Participants at the forum included researchers from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as key policymakers from the Australian Government. Forum attendees included representatives from stakeholder groups that play a vital role in the research and implementation of JR. The forum began with brief discussion of JR and the findings from a previous workshop that examined the feasibility of implementing JR in the Australian Capital Territory. Additional presentations by forum participants covered Australia's incarceration profile; the JR movement in Australia; JR and the politics of localism in England and Wales; the promise and perils of JR; and safer communities, stronger communities - the limits of criminal justice.
