The presentations and discussions at a U.S. Senate Subcommittee Hearing concerning juvenile alcohol abuse are reprinted in this collection of statement.
Abstract
The Hearing was held in Des Moines, Iowa. The Hearing emphasizes the close collaboration between Federal and State agencies in developing effective alcoholism preventive programs targeted at juveniles. In combating this nationwide problem, the Federal Government can provide leadership, guidelines, funding, and a focus for national attention, but the ultimate responsibility rests on the States and particularly on the communities. Testimony includes statements by policy makers, social workers, medical specialists, recovered alcoholics, drug specialists and administrators. The appendix reprints expert witnesses' prepared statements submitted for the records as well as ancillary materials, including a flowchart and description of services available from Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services Inc. (ADASI) and reports on alcohol and drug attitude studies conducted at Iowa schools. News releases from the Iowa Drug Abuse Authority, incidence and prevalence studies of substance abuse in Iowa, and the annual update to the Iowa State plan for alcoholism (1978) complete the collection.
