This report presents data on juvenile arrests for driving under the Influence (DUI) in 1995.
Law enforcement officers arrested nearly 15,000 juveniles (below age 18) for DUI in 1995, which composed 1 percent of all arrests for DUI in that year. The juvenile DUI arrest rates for 1993 through 1995 were the lowest in the past 20 years; however, other alcohol-related juvenile arrests showed smaller declines than DUI arrests in the past 10 years. In almost half of all DUI cases referred to juvenile court, the youth was adjudicated delinquent. After arrest, juvenile DUI cases were handled in different types of courts, depending on the legal structure of the jurisdiction. Some juvenile DUI cases were processed in specialized traffic courts, and in other jurisdictions they were brought to courts that routinely adjudicate delinquency matters. Only 2 percent of juvenile DUI cases were transferred to criminal courts, where the youth was processed as an adult. 1 figure and 2 tables
