This guide offers a general overview of the role of the careworker in America's juvenile corrections system.
Abstract
The guide begins with a review of the history of juvenile corrections and identification of the basic components of the juvenile corrections system. Subsequent sections focus on the juvenile careworker's responsibilities and training, identification of the rights and responsibilities of juveniles, the need to understand juvenile crime and the reasons juveniles are becoming increasingly involved with antisocial behavior, behavior management approaches, intake administration and classification, programs and related services, work with juveniles who have special needs, health care and food services for juveniles in correctional facilities, and the return of the juvenile to the community. The guide concludes with a discussion of the potential role of community volunteers in correctional programs. A bibliography is provided.
