Correctional standards relevant to juvenile community residential facilities are accompanied by an extensive glossary of terms.
Abstract
The standards supplement, issued by the American Correctional Association, covers employment issues, such as new employee orientation, training, staff development, and affirmative action. Recommended training includes but is not limited to human relations and communications skills, crisis intervention, special needs of juveniles, grievance and disciplinary procedures, security procedures, juvenile supervision, juvenile rights and responsibilities, and report writing. The standards supplement also addresses facility organization and management; facility coordination with Federal, State, and local legislative and executive bodies; record safeguards to prevent theft, loss, or destruction; facility sanitation; training in emergency procedures and fire safety; and juvenile recreation and leisure needs. Standards for assuring compliance with fire safety codes are included, along with minimum training goals for new employees, guidelines for the control and use of flammable and toxic substances, and noise level standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
