Juvenile court statistics for the reporting States in 1940-42 cover the cases and characteristics of the juveniles processed.
Abstract
A table indicates the jurisdictions served by the courts that reported in 1940 (514 courts), in 1941 (540 courts), and 1942 (471 courts). More than nine-tenths of the courts reporting in 1942 used a statewide system sponsored by a State agency; these States were Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and Utah. The remaining courts, in 19 States and the District of Columbia, reported directly to the Children's Bureau of the U.S. Labor Department. The table classifies by race the boys' and girls' cases processed in each of the 3 years. The effect of rapid changes in population upon the number of delinquency cases in war-impact areas is shown in another table. The table reports the number of cases processed in each of the years by a number of courts serving large populations; the areas are distinguished by where the population increased and where it decreased from 1940 to 1942. The nature of the changes that occurred in delinquency cases over the 3 years is indicated in five tables; these tables analyze the cases disposed of by 26 courts that reported on individual cases for the 3 years. Data for boys' and girls' cases by race are analyzed according to reason for referral to the court, case disposition, juvenile's age when referred, previous court experience, and source of court referral. In two tables, statistics for cases processed by the 26 courts are analyzed for 1942 only for certain geographic regions of the United States. 9 tables.
