This manual presents the data collection methods, definitions, record layout, and data documentation for 1982 U.S. juvenile court statistics, which indicate the volume of juvenile cases disposed by courts in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and the territories of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico during calendar year 1982.
Abstract
The introduction reviews the history of the Juvenile Court Statistics series. The data for the 1982 report were obtained through data forms and coding instructions mailed to jurisdictions by the National Center for Juvenile Justice. Coding instructions emphasize the need to provide statistics consistent with the definitions provided. Definitions cover 'delinquency cases,' 'dependency/neglect cases,' 'manner of handling,' and 'unit of count.' The data file contains one record for each of the 3,085 counties or reporting units. The record layout shows the field label, field width, and the beginning and ending numbers for each field. The data documentation lists, by State, the agencies that transmitted their 1982 juvenile court statistics to the National Center for Juvenile Justice, the mode of transmission, and type of data reported. The appendix lists counties (reporting units) and their FIPS codes as designated by the U.S. Bureau of Census.
