This article presents a plan with community-focused strategies for teaching juveniles and adults about juvenile law.
Abstract
"Play By the Rules" was originally designed to teach Alabama's seventh grade students to understand and respect the law. The first edition of the book was published and distributed for Law Week in May 2001. Approximately 500 educators, school resource officers, and parents attended training workshops across the State; the core trainers for using "Play By the Rules" came from that group. The article recommends that training for teaching the State laws should be made available to schools across the country. "Play by the Rules" follows the models set by Law Related Education programs. Legal literacy concerning State civil, criminal, and constitutional themes is taught using practical yet meaningful information. The article considers this year's request for 100,000 copies of "Play By the Rules" to be evidence that the need to teach children and adults the juvenile laws has become a priority for delinquency prevention.
