Abstract
This book, intended for use by policymakers and practitioners, presents a series of papers that address efforts to prevent today's juvenile from becoming tomorrow's adult criminals. The papers examine the period of transition from juvenile to legal adult, the age of 18 in the United States and most Western nations that can be a difficult time for changing the criminal patterns of young people. The authors of these papers are leading scholars from multiple disciplines in both North America and Europe. The papers cover the following subjects: Criminal Career Patterns; Explanations for Offending; Contextual Influences; Special Categories of Serious and Violent Offenders: Drug Dealers, Gang Members, Homicide Offenders, and Sex Offenders; Prediction and Risk/Needs Assessments; Legal Boundaries Between the Juvenile and Criminal Justice Systems in the United States; Young Offenders and an Effective Justice System Response: What Happens, What Should Happen, and What We Need to Know; Promoting Change, Changing Lives: Effective Prevention and Intervention to Reduce Serious Offending; and European Perspectives. The final paper in the book contains an overview of the work presented in this volume along with a set of recommendations for more effectively dealing with the transition period for young people from juvenile to legal adult.
