The correlation between likelihood of recidivism among juvenile offenders and 21 variables was studied using 377 case records of juveniles recidivating to the Louisiana Training Institutes between 1973-77. Variables linked to recidivism were height, grade in school, length of time known to law enforcement officials, and parish of residence.
Abstract
There was little variation in recidivism among the sample of 314 males and 63 females according to race or sex. However, some variation was noted according to whether or not the juveniles wore tattoos, had previously been institutionalized, or had committted violent or nonviolent crimes. Religion and income also correlated with some variation in recidivism. Suggestions for further research are noted, particularly to validate the negative correlations between recidivism and the four statistically significant variables. Study data are presented in tabular form. Six references are provided.
