TWO UNITS FOR NINTH GRADE SOCIAL STUDY COURSES ARE PRESENTED WHICH COVER JUVENILE DELINQUENCY AND CRIME AND JUSTICE. THE EXPERIMENTAL UNITS WERE DESIGNED AND TAUGHT AT EDISON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN JANESVILLE, WIS.
Abstract
THEY AIM AT HIGH INTEREST VALUE, SITUATION SIMULATIONS, EXTENSIVE USE OF CLASSROOM DISCUSSION, VALUE CLARIFICATION TECHNIQUES, USE OF LOCAL RESOURCE PEOPLE, KEY CONCEPT TESTS, AND INDIVIDUALLY SELECTED PROJECTS TO DEMONSTRATE CREATIVITY AND GRASP OF THE TOPIC. THE INDIVIDUAL TOPICS TREATED IN THE 3-WEEK JUVENILE DELINQUENCY UNIT AND THE 7-WEEK CRIMINAL JUSTICE UNIT ARE MINORITIES (THEIR LEGAL AND SOCIAL HANDICAPS), POVERTY AND WELFARE (AWARENESS OF SOCIAL SUFFERING AND UNEQUAL OPPORTUNITIES), AND CRIME AND JUSTICE (THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND ITS PROBLEMS). FURTHER SUBJECTS ARE YOUTH CULTURE (ADOLESCENT PROBLEMS), JUVENILE DELINQUENCY (A SEPARATE JUVENILE COURT SYSTEM), LAW AND THE CONSUMER (CONSUMERISM AND CONSUMER PROTECTION), PROBLEMS OF THE CITIES (TRANSPORTATION, HOUSING, POLLUTION), AND ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS (PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF ABUSE). EACH UNIT CONTAINS NUMEROUS ANCILLIARY MATERIALS: A DAY-BY-DAY TEACHING OUTLINE; A BIBLIOGRAPHY INCLUDING TEXTBOOKS, REFERENCE MATERIALS, GAMES, AND AUDIOVISUAL MATERIAL; PRE-TESTS AND KEY CONCEPT TESTS; STUDENT DISCUSSION SHEETS OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIAL; PERTINENT CASE STUDIES; STUDENT LOGBOOKS; AND SUGGESTED STUDENT PROJECT ACTIVITIES.
