Abstract
A review of the justice system's response to delinquency provides a historical perspective on delinquency and social policy, considers the system's response to status offenders and violent juveniles, and examines the remand of juveniles to adult court. Consideration of delinquency sources includes chapters on nutritional and ecological approaches to the reduction of delinquency, the relationship between crime and family policy, and the appeal of juvenile gangs. The section on "juveniles in the system" discusses the police control of juveniles, the diversion of juveniles from formal processing, the operation of the juvenile court, and the death penalty for juveniles. Four chapters focus on the juvenile in confinement. Topics include house arrest, juvenile suicides in confinement, treatment of the violent juvenile, and exploitation in juvenile institutions. Three chapters examine the future of juvenile justice policy and directions for reform. Chapter footnotes and tables.
