Computerized statistics on juvenile delinquency in Canada during 1978 are presented by the Canadian Socioeconomic Information Management System.
Abstract
The juvenile court survey includes information on persons charged under the Juvenile Delinquents Act and dealt with in juvenile courts. According to the act, juvenile courts have exclusive jurisdiction over children under 16 (or the age determined by the province), who are accused of committing offenses. The method of dealing with juveniles varies from province to province. Units of measurement for computer tabulation purposes are the absolute number of delinquencies (which may reflect individual delinquents more than once), and the number of children involved in delinquency. The form used by provinces to report statistics provides the legal information for making charges against a juvenile and serves as a statistical document for recording information on the accused, the offense, and the court proceedings. In general, the police complete the information section of the form. Extensive tables list the nature of delinquency by adjudication and disposition for Canada as a whole and for each of the provinces separately. The nature of delinquency by the age and sex of the child for Canada as a whole and for each separate province and court decisions by age and sex for Canada and the provinces are specified. A glossary and samples of reporting forms are supplied. The work is presented in English and French.
