Based on reports submitted by Canada's juvenile courts, this document contains national and Provincial statistics on juvenile delinquency for 1979.
Abstract
Legislation and age limits which determine the jurisdiction of juvenile courts are explained, and differences among Provinces are noted. Offenders between age 7 and 17 are usually tried by the juvenile system. Court processes, dispositional alternatives, and data collection methods are also detailed. Although methods for dealing with juveniles vary amnong Provinces, the police usually have the option of informal methods and are responsible for stating charges if more serious action is required. Juvenile dispositions include institutionalization, probation, fines, restitution, suspended sentences, and reprimands. Court organization and reporting practices are described for each Province, with the exception of British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. Statistical tables for Canada and each Province summarize data on approximately 30 categories of juvenile offenses handled by the courts in 1979 according to adjudication, disposition, and age and sex are also provided. A glossary and reporting forms used by the courts are included. The document is in both English and French.
