MEASURES OF TIME ORIENTATION, TIME ESTIMATION, AND DELAY OF GRATIFICATION WERE OBTAINED FROM MALE AND FEMALE INSTITUTIONALIZED JUVENILE DELINQUENTS IN 1974, AND WERE COMPARED TO RESULTS OF A SIMILAR 1959 STUDY.
Abstract
THE 1974 GROUP CONSISTED OF 40 DELINQUENTS FROM THE RHODE ISLAND TRAINING SCHOOL FOR BOYS AND 10 FROM A COMPARABLE INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS, TIME ORIENTATION WAS MEASURED BY MEANS OF A STORY COMPLETION TEST. WITHIN THE 1974 SAMPLE, COMPARISONS WERE MADE BETWEEN MALES AND FEMALES, BLACK AND WHITE, AND YOUNGER AND OLDER DELINQUENTS. THE SAME STORY COMPLETION ITEMS WERE USED IN THE 1959 RESEARCH. IN THE EARLIER STUDY, COMPLETED STORIES WERE OBTAINED FOR 24 BOYS, AND 30 GIRLS. THESE DELINQUENTS WERE FROM THE SAME INSTITUTIONS, AS THOSE SAMPLED IN THE 1974 STUDY. IN GENERAL, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE 1974 DELINQUENTS APPEAR TO BE MORE IMPULSIVE, PRESENT ORIENTED, AND IN NEED OF IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION THAN WERE THE DELINQUENTS IN 1959. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
