THE ROLE OF JUVENILE DETENTION IS EVOLVING TO PROVIDE SERVICES THAT ARE TAILORED TO MEETING THE NEEDS OF CHILDREN WHO ARE AWAITING COURT APPEARANCE.
Abstract
JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITIES, WHICH ONCE PROVIDED MERELY PROVIDED TEMPORARY CARE OF CHILDREN IN RESTRICTED FACILITIES PENDING COURT DISPOSITION OR TRANSFER TO ANOTHER JURISDICTION OR AGENCY, ARE NOW CHANGING WITH THE EXPANDED ROLE OF THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. THIS CHANGE IS HIGHLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE KENT AND GAULT DECISIONS WHICH PROVIDED SIMILAR PROTECTIONS FOR JUVENILES TO THOSE ALREADY AFFORDED ADULTS. LEGISLATION IN SOME STATES HAS LIMITED SECURE DETENTION FOR STATUS OFFENDERS. AS A RESULT THERE ARE NOW SHELTER FACILITIES WHICH STRESS INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN STAFF AND CLIENTS RATHER THAN JUST SUPERVISION.
