This document presents the U.S. Department of Justice's final rule for national standards for juvenile facility as required under the Prison Rape Elimination Act.
Abstract
As required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), the U.S. Department of Justice was tasked with establishing national standards for preventing, detecting, and responding to prison rape. The Department was required to establish standards for juvenile as well as adult correctional facilities. This document presents the final rule on national standards for juvenile correctional facilities as required by the PREA. Following a list of definitions for terms used in the standards, the 13 main sections of the standards are presented in this document. These standards address: 1) Prevention Planning; 2) Responsive Planning; 3) Training and Education; 4) Screening for Risk of Sexual Victimization and Abusiveness; 5) Reporting; 6) Official Response Following a Resident Report; 7) Investigations; 8) Discipline; 9) Medical and Mental Care; 10) Data Collection and Review; 11) Audits; 12) Auditing and Corrective Action; and 13) State Compliance.
