This trainer's guide describes how to use the information in "The Juvenile Firesetter/Arson Control and Prevention Program Guidelines for Implementation," as well as other resources, to develop a comprehensive juvenile firesetter prevention training workshop for the various agency professionals who work with juvenile firesetters.
Abstract
These materials were developed as part of a 2-year initiative designed to assess, develop, test, and disseminate information on promising approaches for the control and prevention of juvenile firesetting and arson. "The Guidelines for Implementation" outlines strategies for program management, screening and evaluation, intervention services, referral mechanisms, publicity and outreach, monitoring systems, and developing relationships with the justice system. It also provides resource materials obtained from juvenile firesetter programs. This trainer's guide contains a detailed curriculum for the training program and provides strategies for modifying the curriculum to meet specific needs, selecting instructors, selecting participants, and using instructional materials. The appendixes list 14 additional annotated resource materials, present a paper on the effective preparation and delivery of presentations, provide a sample workshop evaluation instrument, and describe five case studies of juvenile firesetters.
