A LAW REVIEW ARTICLE DESCRIBING THE JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION ACT OF 1974 HIGHLIGHTED WITH STATISTICS ON JUVENILE CRIME AND SUMMARIES OF PAST FEDERAL LEGISLATION AND ITS ADMINISTRATION.
Abstract
SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY ACT OF 1974 ARE DESCRIBED IN RELATION TO SIMILAR LEGISLATION OF 1968 AND 1961. THE COMPREHENSIVE NATURE OF THE ACT AND THE CENTRALIZATION OF ADMINISTRATION IN THE OFFICE OF JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION ARE EMPHASIZED. PAST DIVISION OF JUVENILE JUSTICE EFFORTS BETWEEN HEW AND LEAA ARE EXAMINED TO POINT OUT THE UNIFYING NATURE OF THE 1974 LEGISLATION. PROVISIONS FOR THE RUNAWAY YOUTH ACT, THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION, AND THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR CORRECTIONS ARE ALSO EXAMINED. A BRIEF INSTITUTE FOR CORRECTIONS PROVIDES THE READER WITH A MEASURE OF THE SERIOUS PROBLEM THE LEGISLATION ADDRESSES.
