This article describes Ohio's Juvenile Justice Assistants Program, which offers qualified university students and local residents the opportunity to participate in the daily functioning of a particular juvenile justice or victim services agency.
Abstract
While contributing service to youthful offenders and victims, the placement agency, and the community, juvenile justice assistants also have the opportunity to explore career interests, integrate classroom knowledge with real world experience, and earn academic credit for their participation in the program. Placement opportunities include juvenile courts, detention centers, residential treatment centers, group homes, victim-witness programs, and child protective services throughout the area. The Juvenile Justice Assistants Program has three primary purposes: to enhance the services offered to northeast Ohio youths, to assist the agencies that serve these youths, and to provide a unique training experience to future juvenile justice professionals. These goals have been achieved, and the program benefits have exceeded the original purposes. The authors believe the program can be implemented in other areas of the Nation. 5 references and an appended list of participating agencies
