In juvenile probation where there are multifunctional people-modulating contexts, accumulating deviance results in a progression of remedial reactions.
Abstract
Scaled sanctioning proceeds from failed normal remedies, escalated in severity to a sanction of last resort which is often followed by inaction. This sequence is supported by juvenile probation officers' dispositions. The sequence does not show the influence of juvenile probation officers' background characteristics or delinquency conceptions. Such scenarios appear characteristic of juvenile justice advocacy. Greater conformity is expected from junior juvenile probation officers while senior juvenile probation officers are given greater discretion. This is reflective of the dual charge of rehabilitation and community protection and results in systematized attention to community risk tempered by experienced juvenile probation officer latitude. 7 tables, 1 appendix, 21 notes, 60 references.
