A national empirical sample of two groups of boys born in Poland in 1959 were compared with respect to the characteristics of those who committed their offenses while under the influence of alcohol and the control group, who did not commit the juvenile offenses under the influence of alcohol.
Abstract
Data came from court records, official records of adult criminal cases, questionnaires received from sobering-up stations, and standardized interviews with the participants. Results revealed that the offenses committed under the influence of alcohol were often not the first offenses of the youths. Such offenses were usually committed at the age of 15-16, which was rather late in the juvenile's career. The offenses committed by the first group were much more aggressive than those committed by the control group. The youths who committed offenses under the influence of alcohol also had higher rates of serious childhood diseases, educational neglect by parents, social maladjustment, and recidivism. Findings confirmed that juveniles who commit offenses under the influence of alcohol are a high-risk group compared to properly socialized youths and should receive special care by family courts and other agencies.
