The Juvenile Probation Officer Initiative was established in 1987 by the National Center for Juvenile Justice with funding from the Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to increase professionalism in juvenile probation and ultimately to improve the administration of juvenile justice in the United States.
Abstract
The initiative rests on the view that proactive approaches are better than reactive ones and that practice should be guided by the best available knowledge. Thus, it focuses on research, program development, technical assistance, and information dissemination. National projects include a data base, a desktop reference guide to good probation practices, a training curriculum for entry-level probation officers, the preparation of special reports, and a professional development series of publications.
