Abstract
A brochure provides an overview of the problem of juvenile detention, outlines issues to be explored, and provides questions to pose to officials. Suggestions are offered to help citizens organize to change policies that lead to juvenile detention. A series of papers describes pretrial alternative programs that can be used to reduce or eliminate juvenile detention. The strategies and programs mentioned are police issuance of summons or citations to juveniles in lieu of physical arrest, a 24-hour intake service, family crisis intervention, a community advocate program, a comprehensive juvenile services center, home detention, an emergency shelter, a runaway house, group home detention, and a secure juvenile detention facility. Transportation to the placement is also considered. The packet also contains a glossary of terms commonly used in the juvenile justice system and a list of resources and materials pertinent to the issues discussed.
