Using data obtained from published sources, this report by the Australian Institute of Criminology presents a preliminary snapshot of juveniles' contact with the criminal justice system in Australia.
Abstract
This report from the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) presents data on juveniles' contact with the Australian criminal justice system. Data for this report were obtained from various sources including AIC monitoring programs, the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. The data used is the most recent available and varies by jurisdiction and agency. The report is divided into four sections: 1) juveniles as complainants and victims of crime; 2) juveniles contact with the police as alleged offenders; 3) juveniles contact with the children's courts as alleged offenders; and 4) juvenile offenders and corrections. Throughout the report, the term juvenile is used to refer to those aged 17 and under, unless otherwise noted, and the data is broken down by age, sex, and Indigenous status. The report is not meant to provide a complete picture of juveniles' contact with the Australian criminal justice system, but rather as a starting point for future research and monitoring in this area. Numerous tables and figures are included in the report. References
