Eight articles discuss various issues pertinent to juvenile corrections, including the meeting of disproportionate minority confinement mandates, community service for juvenile offenders, violence prevention for at-risk juveniles, juvenile probation, and juvenile detention.
Abstract
The article that discusses States' meeting of disproportionate minority confinement mandates in Federal legislation describes ways of measuring, responding to, and monitoring disproportionate minority juvenile confinement in five States. Another article describes a balanced approach to community corrections for juveniles that focuses on community protection, accountability, and competency development. The third article explains North Carolina's 4MAT system for teaching juvenile offenders an academic curriculum. The goal of this teaching model is to provide a variety of learning activities that include at some point in the cycle each learner's preferred style. Four Ohio programs designed to prevent at-risk youths from engaging in violent behavior include a program for juvenile inmates; a curriculum for violence prevention designed for school and correctional settings; a program for violence prevention in the foster care system; and a community-based initiative. Remaining articles address trends in juvenile probation, common goals that are the key to success in juvenile justice systems, and recommendations for improving short-term and long-term juvenile detention practices.
