Abstract
ONE IN A SERIES OF FOUR, 'PREVENTION' IS ORGANIZED INTO FIVE DISTINCT SECTIONS. THE INITIAL PAGES EXAMINE THE SIZE OF THE PREVENTION FIELD, PLANNING TOOLS, AND PROGRAM EFFECTIVENESS. SECTION TWO COVERS THE GOAL TOWARD WHICH ALL EFFORTS ARE DIRECTED, PARENTAL EXPECTATIONS REINFORCED THROUGH SOCIAL INSITUTIONS, AND SYMPTOMS AND SYNDROMES OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR. THE FOLLOWING MATERIAL FOCUSES ON THE SECONDARY LEVEL OF PREVENTION, BASED ON AN APPROACH RECOGNIZING EARLY WARNING SYMPTOMS AND PROVIDING INTERVENTION BEFORE THEIR ESCALATION. ALSO PROVIDED IS A DESCRIPTION OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH SERVICES. THE FINAL CHAPTERS ARE DEVOTED TO PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS, OR AREAS OF CONCENTRATION. THIS PUBLICATION CONTAINS AN ANNOTATED CONTENTS, A SUBJECT INDEX, AND INDIVIDUAL REFERENCES AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER. STATISTICAL CHARTS AND TABLES INDICATE JUVENILES BY COUNTY OF RESIDENCE, ENROLLMENT BY GRADE, AND COMPLETED DELINQUENCY PREVENTION EXPERIMENTS. SEE NCJ-11779 AND 11780.
