During 1979, the jail inspection staff investigated 38 letters of complaint from individual inmates and/or their friends and inspected 124 operational jail/detention facilities in Kansas.
Abstract
The most common deficiencies encountered were inadequate supervision of inmates, noncompliance with State Fire Marshal's regulations, hazardous materials in cell areas, broken security equipment, electrical cords accessible to inmates, and no written emergency procedures. The jail inspection staff also assisted local law enforcement officials in training local jail staff and coordinated joint inspections of local jail facilities with the State Fire Marshal's Office and the State Department of Health and Environment. Inspection data are provided.
