This report from the Kansas Sentencing Commission presents data on the State's projected adult inmate prison population for fiscal year 2012.
Abstract
Based on fiscal year (FY) 2011 prison population data, the Kansas Sentencing Commission has established projected levels for the State's adult inmate prison population for FY 2012. These projections indicate that the prison population is expected to increase by 22.9 percent over a 10-year period ending in FY 2021 to a high of 11,284 inmates; and by FY 2021, the population is expected to be comprised of offgrid and nondrug severity levels I, II, and III inmates - 42 percent, nondrug severity levels IV, V, and VI inmates - 20.3 percent, drug inmates - 17.5 percent, nonviolent inmates - 12.8 percent, and parole/post-release supervision condition violators - 6.8 percent. The projections in this report were developed from data on the most recent felony sentencing information and current prison information as collected by the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) and the Kansas Sentencing Commission. Key findings from the FY 2011 data show that 4,958 offenders were admitted to facilities, the second highest in 5 years; direct new commitments represented the largest number of admissions at 40.2 percent, while parole/post-release condition violators and conditional release violators represented 20.7 percent of admissions; and the average length of stay for inmates at severity levels I, II, and VIII decreased, increased for inmates at severity levels III, IV, and VI, remained comparatively stable for severity levels VII, IX, and X, while no change was seen at severity level V.
