DATA ON THE NEWLY UNIFIED KANSAS COURT SYSTEM, WHICH CONSOLIDATED COURTS OF COUNTYWIDE LIMITED AND SPECIAL JURISDICTION INTO THE DISTRICT COURT, ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
BECAUSE OF THE UNIFICATION, MISDEMEANOR CASES FORMERLY FILED IN COUNTY, MAGISTRATE, OR CITY COURTS ARE NOW FILED IN THE DISTRICT COURT. THEREFORE, A SUDDEN INFLUX OF CRIMINAL CASES APPEARS IN THE STATISTICS. TO MAKE THIS REPORT COMPARABLE TO PREVIOUS REPORTS OF THE KANSAS COURT SYSTEM, THE TOPOLOGY OF CRIMINAL CASES HAS BEEN CHANGED TO REFLECT STATUTORY CLASSIFICATION AND FOOTNOTES HAVE BEEN APPENDED WHEN THE CONSOLIDATION HAS AFFECTED REPORTING PROCEDURE. KANSAS NOW HAS A SINGLE TRIAL COURT OF GENERAL JURISDICTION, THE DISTRICT COURT, AND TWO LEVELS OF APPELLATE COURTS, THE COURT OF APPEALS AND THE SUPREME COURT.
