Abstract
A description of the skills required of the bodyguard pertain to unarmed and armed combat, driving, intelligence acquisition, surveillance techniques, and operating techniques. Clientele requiring bodyguards are classified as people in danger (politicians, corporate executives, and Arabs), people who attract crowds (rock stars and the rich and famous), and people under surveillance. The bodyguard's 'opposition' is categorized as 'loonies,' organized crime 'hit' persons, foreign agents, and professional criminals. Six basic principles for a bodyguard operation are explained, including staying with the principal, knowing the principal's world, preceding the principal into an area to check it, taking command, planning for and guarding against the worst, and making life difficult for the opposition. Also discussed are security methods when transporting the principle in a car, working within and using the law, and 'tools of the trade' (weapons, countermeasures, and communications). The author's personal experiences as a bodyguard are used to illustrate the principles and methods discussed.
