This article describes specifications of effective foul-weather gear for law enforcement officers.
Abstract
Keeping dry in foul weather is important from a performance as well as a health perspective. When an individual becomes wet and cold, and body temperature drops, he or she will be less productive. In addition, rainwear is important for visibility. An officer who can't be seen on a dark, rainy highway runs a greater risk of injury or death. Foul-weather gear must be durable and long-lasting; frequent replacements are a strain on already tight budgets. The gear must be comfortable, or officers won't wear it. Some departments still offer a dedicated rain coat, while others are moving towards one all-purpose jacket. Many departments are investing in garments of new fabrics that are waterproof, water-resistant, and allow air transmission to keep the wearer cool. Some jackets have panels that are daytime orange visible and the print on them is nighttime-reflective. Manufacturers are attempting to produce year-round garments that are warm, comfortable, highly visible, and give departments a uniform look.
