Abstract
The State's total crime rate for 1978 increased by 0.4 percent, compared to an 8.4 percent decline in the previous year. The increase was especially apparent in the offense of forcible rape for which an 8.3 percent rate increase was noted. Other increases were also reported for auto theft, breaking and entering and for robbery and larceny-theft. However, the murder rate decreased by 9.9 percent, and the rate for aggravated assault was down by 8.9 percent. A decrease in total arrests was reported for murder, robbery, aggravated assault, and auto theft. Juvenile arrests were down 1.1 percent, while adult arrests declined 9 percent. Tables, charts, and graphs are included. (Author abstract modified)
