This report presents statistics on trends in reported crime and in criminal court processes, corrections, and juvenile justice in New South Wales, Australia, primarily between 1990 and 1995.
Abstract
The analysis revealed no significant upward or downward trend in the rates of recorded homicide victims, sex offenses, robbery, vandalism and stealing from individuals or dwellings and a significant upward trend in the rates of recorded assaults and breaking and entering between April 1994 and September 1995. The number of matters disposed without a defended hearing declined, and in the median delay between the first appearance and disposition for defended cases in the local courts. The number of criminal cases registered for trial or sentence in the District Criminal Court and registered in the Supreme Court declined significantly between July 1990 and June 1995. Additional statistics focus on trends in inmate populations, prisoner admissions, community based corrections, juvenile justice cases, juvenile dispositions, and juvenile offenses.
