This report documents the rising incidence of gun-related violence that affects children, including violence perpetrated by children.
Abstract
Between 1985 and 1990, the number of teenagers murdered by firearms doubled, while the number of 15-year-old boys charged with murder increased by 217 percent. This report focuses on four areas: firearm homicide and youth, youth and firearm suicide, firearms and unintentional deaths, and gun violence in schools. The report concludes with nine major recommendations: to remove guns from homes with children, to get students involved in this issue, to encourage student involvement in gun-control related organizations, to institute Federal safety regulations pertaining to firearms, to integrate gun safety education into existing youth programs, to enact measures that restrict the easy accessibility of firearms and regulate their ownership, to teach young children peaceful conflict resolution skills, to encourage celebrities to educate children on the dangers of firearms, and to mount a public education campaign detailing the dangers of firearms. 56 notes and 17 references
