THIS BOOK DEALS WITH THE SUBJECT OF PRISON REFORM AND EXPOSES SOME OF THE INEQUITIES AND INJUSTICES THAT THE AUTHOR OBSERVED IN OUR SYSTEM OF CORRECTIONS.
Abstract
ALTHOUGH THE AUTHOR REPORTED THAT PRISON OFFICIALS WERE GENERALLY RETICENT AND UNRESPONSIVE TO HER QUERIES, SHE MANAGES TO COLLECT A GREAT AMOUNT OF MATERIAL CONCERNING WORK RELEASE PROGRAMS, DRUG EXPERIMENTS, PRISON FINANCING AND PAROLE PROGRAMS. THE AUTHOR STATES THAT PRISONERS WHO PARTICIPATE IN WORK RELEASE MAY ACTUALLY BE WORSE OFF THAN THEIR FELLOW INMATES BECAUSE THEY ARE FORCED TO PAY FOR MANY OF THEIR OWN EXPENSES, AND SOMETIMES MUST FORFEIT THE MONEY THAT IS NORMALLY PRESENTED TO THEM UPON RELEASE. SHE DETAILS HOW PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES LEASE PRISONERS AS HUMAN MATERIAL FOR EXPERIMENTATION. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS A LIST OF ORGANIZATION THAT OFFER LEGAL ADVICE OR SOME FORM OF AID TO THE PRISONER.
