ON THE BASIS OF A SURVEY OF POLICE OFFICERS WHO LISTED THE INCIDENCES OVER THE PAST YEAR IN WHICH EXCEPTIONAL PHYSICAL ABILITY WAS REQUIRED, A NUMBER OF JOB-RELATED AGILITY TESTS WERE DEVISED AND TESTED.
Abstract
THESE TESTS INCLUDED A QUARTER-MILE RUN, A FENCE SCALE, A BODY DRAG, A STRETCHED CARRY, PUSHING A CAR, AND AIMING A SHOTGUN OVER A PATROL CAR. NO TEST WAS DEVISED TO MEASURE AN APPLICANT'S ABILITY TO SUBDUE A PERSON RESISTING ARREST, THE MOST FREQUENTLY LISTED PHYSICAL EXERTION. THESE TESTS ARE DESCRIBED, AND THE RESULTS OF A GROUP OF BOTH MALE AND FEMALE CANDIDATES ARE GIVEN. OFFICERS' RESPONSES TO THE PHYSICAL EXERTION SURVEY ARE ALSO INCLUDED.
