CASE HISTORIES OF 17 MALE RESIDENTS OF HOSPITALS FOR THE MENTALLY ABNORMAL DIAGNOSED AS HAVING KLINEFELTER'S SYNDROME WERE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF CONTROLS TO EXAMINE LINKS BETWEEN ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND THE SYNDROME.
Abstract
FOLLOWING A BUCCAL MUCOSAL SMEAR SURVEY OF ALL MALE PATIENTS IN HOSPITALS FOR MENTALLY SUBNORMAL PERSONS IN LONDON, ENGLAND, 17 CHROMATIN POSITIVE MALES WERE DISCOVERED. THE HISTORIES OF THESE MALES SHOWED THAT SEVEN HAD COMMITTED CRIMINAL OFFENSES INCLUDING TWO CASES INVOLVING SMALL BOYS, ONE CASE OF UNSPECIFIED SEXUAL BEHAVIOR, AND FOUR CASES INVOLVING THREATENING BEHAVIOR, AGGRESSIVE ACTS, THEFT, AND DRUNKENNESS. FIVE PATIENTS HAD NO HISTORY OF ANTISOCIAL ACTIVITIES, AND FIVE SHOWED EVIDENCE OF ANTISOCIAL BUT NONCRIMINAL ACTIVITY (INDECENT ACTS, DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY, AND GENERAL AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR). TO COMPARE THE FINDINGS OF THIS GROUP TO A COMPARABLE SUBNORMAL GROUP, THE HISTORIES OF THE TOTAL MALE POPULATION OF A SIMILAR HOSPITAL (177 PERSONS) WERE EXAMINED. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT 19.5 PERCENT WERE ADMITTED FOR ANTISOCIAL ACTIVITIES. THESE FINDINGS APPEAR TO AGREE WITH PREVIOUS STUDY RESULTS WHICH INDICATE A HIGHER DEGREE OF AGGRESSIVE ACTIVITY (ESPECIALLY LARCENY, SEXUAL BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS, AND AGGRESSION) AMONG MENTALLY SUBNORMAL PERSONS WITH KLINEFELTER'S SYNDROME THAN AMONG SUBNORMAL PERSONS WITH NORMAL CHROMOSOME KARYOTYPES. A TOTAL OF 3 CASES OF XXYY KARYOTYPES WERE FOUND AMONG THE 17 MALES. REFERENCES AND TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED. (DAG)
