This article presents the official report of the symposium on “The police in France and in Great Britain.”
Abstract
Discussing a symposium organized by the Franco-British Council on November 8-9, 2000, this article details the official report of this symposium, entitled “The police in France and in Great Britain.” Reproduced in its entirety, this official report from the symposium discusses both police forces concerns regarding improving their public images and better demonstrating their overall effectiveness. This joint symposium was an opportunity for both the French and the British police forces to reveal their modes of operation, to open themselves up to self-criticism, to express their doubts and responses to social problems, and to detail their relationships with both young people and ethnic minorities. The author concludes that such symposiums demonstrate the effectiveness of police cooperation.
