THE RESULTS OF TEST ANALYSES PERFORMED BY 121 FORENSIC LABORATORIES ON PROJECTILES AND CARTRIDGES ARE DOCUMENTED IN CHARTS AND TABLES.
Abstract
THE SURVEY WAS THE SECOND IN A SERIES AIMED AT ASSESSING LABORATORIES' PROFICIENCY IN ANALYZING VARIOUS KINDS OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCE. PARTICIPATING LABORATORIES (170 SURVEYED, 121 USABLE RESPONSES) WERE SENT TWO CARTRIDGE CASES AND TWO PROJECTILES. THE LABORATORIES WERE ASKED TO IDENTIFY THE TYPE, MAKE, MODEL AND CALIBER OF THE WEAPON FROM WHICH EACH PROJECTILE OR CARTRIDGE HAD BEEN FIRED OR EJECTED, TO PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THAT WOULD BE DEVELOPED ROUTINELY IN SIMILAR ANALYSES, AND TO INDICATE THE METHODS OF ANALYSIS USED. TWENTY-FOUR TABLES DOCUMENT THE LABORATORIES' RESPONSES AND COMPARE THE RESPONSES WITH INFORMATION PROVIDED BY MANUFACTURERS AND REFEREE LABORATORIES. DETAILS OF INDIVIDUAL LABORATORY RESPONSES TO EACH QUESTIONNAIRE ITEM ARE INCLUDED. NO NARRATIVE INTERPRETATION IS PROVIDED. INFORMATION ON SURVEY METHODS AND A COPY OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ARE INCLUDED. OTHER PROFICIENCY SURVEYS INVOLVING FIREARMS EVIDENCE ARE REPORTED IN NCJ-47528 AND 47542. SURVEYS INVOLVING OTHER FORMS OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCE ARE DOCUMENTED IN NCJ-47522, 47524-47527, AND 47529-47541. (LKM)
