DESCRIPTION OF LABORATORY SERVICES AVAILABLE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AT THE NATIONAL OFFICE LABORATORY OF THE ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, AND FIREARMS DIVISION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
Abstract
SERVICES INCLUDE TOOLMARK AND FIREARM EXAMINATIONS, CHEMICAL AND INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS, QUESTIONED DOCUMENT EXAMINATIONS, AND COMPLETE PHOTO LAB FACILITIES. EXAMPLES FROM ACTUAL CASE WORK ARE PROVIDED. THE BOOKLET TREATS EVIDENTIARY MATERIALS COMMONLY FOUND IN DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE DEBRIS AND DESCRIBES HOW SUCH MATERIAL MAY BE LOCATED, PRESERVED, AND SENT TO THE NATIONAL OFFICE LABORATORY FOR EXAMINATION AND IDENTIFICATION. INCLUDED ARE DESCRIPTIONS OF TYPICAL LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS WITH BOMBS AND INCENDIARIES. IN CASES INVOLVING VIOLATIONS OF THE 1968 GUN CONTROL ACT, IT IS OFTEN POSSIBLE TO LINK A SUSPECT TO THE VIOLATION THROUGH THE PROPER COLLECTION OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCE AND THE UTILIZATION OF THE LABORATORY FACILITIES. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE IF A SUSPECT HAS RECENTLY FIRED A WEAPON THROUGH LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF GUNSHOT RESIDUE COLLECTED FROM THE INDIVIDUALS HANDS.
