A DESCRIPTION OF THE LAFAYETTE CITY (IND.) POLICE DEPARTMENT AND ITS ACTIVITIES IS PRESENTED IN THIS 1978 ANNUAL REPORT.
Abstract
THE LAFAYETTE POLICE DEPARTMENT IN 1978 CONSISTED OF 78 POLICE OFFICERS AND 13 CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES. A NUMBER OF OFFICERS AND CIVILIANS WERE APPOINTED, PROMOTED, DEMOTED, RETIRED, OR ASKED TO RESIGN FROM ACTIVE DUTY IN 1978. A LIST OF THOSE INDIVIDUALS IS PROVIDED. MANY OFFICERS ATTENDED SCHOOLS AND SEMINARS DURING THE YEAR IN THE FIELD OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE. INCLUDED AMONG THE TOPICS STUDIED WERE SEX CRIME INVESTIGATION, DRUG ENFORCEMENT, POLICE ADMINISTRATION, LAW ENFORCEMENT PHOTOGRAPHY, TERRORISM, BOMB SCENE INVESTIGATION, AND FINGERPRINTING. IN ADDITION, OFFICERS RECEIVED FIREARMS TRAINING. THE ANNUAL REPORT ALSO INCLUDES A SUMMARY OF COMPLAINTS INVESTIGATED BY THE DEPARTMENT FOR THE YEAR. THE MOST COMMON CALL FOR A POLICE OFFICER WAS A REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE BY ANOTHER UNIT. TRAFFIC STOPS WERE ALMOST AS COMMON. STATISTICS ON INVESTIGATIONS AND THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATIONS OF MAJOR OFFENSES ARE PRESENTED. LARCENY AND THEFT WERE THE MOST FREQUENT OF THE MAJOR OFFENSES. OUT OF THE 2,491 MAJOR OFFENSES INVESTIGATED DURING 1978, 673 WERE CLEARED, FOR A CLEARANCE RATE OF 27 PERCENT; THIS RATE REPRESENTS AN 8 PERCENT INCREASE FROM THE PRECEDING YEAR. A TABLE REPORTING THE VALUE OF STOLEN PROPERTY AND THE AMOUNT RECOVERED IS ALSO FURNISHED. AUTO THEFT ACCOUNTED FOR MORE MONETARY LOSS THAN ANY OTHER TYPE OF CRIME. THE ANNUAL REPORT ALSO INCLUDES A LIST OF ADULT CONVICTIONS FOR 1978. SPEEDING WAS THE OFFENSE RESULTING IN THE MOST CONVICTIONS. JUVENILE DISPOSITIONS ARE ALSO PRESENTED. TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED.
