This document describes and presents materials and media reports regarding the Citizen Police Academy, a 10-week program operated by the police department of Lakewood, Colo., since 1989 to educate citizens about how the police perform their duties as well as how the department serves the community.
Abstract
Citizens attend a 3-hour class one night a week. The police department command staff select citizens to attend the academy from nominations submitted by police personnel as well as past academy participants. Police personnel teach the classes. Topics include basic law, patrol procedures, narcotics, vice, SWAT, canine, and police officer survival. Participants also take part in role playing and receive direct training in firearms, arrest control, and building searches. The classes have improved understanding and bonds between the citizens and the police department and is promoting community involvement in solutions to improve society.
