ANALYSIS, DATED JULY, 1976, OF THE PRESENT AND FUTURE NEEDS FOR PROVIDING INDIGENT DEFENSE SERVICES IN LANE COUNTY, OREGON.
Abstract
THE REPORT INCLUDES AN EVALUATION OF THE EXISTING COURT SYSTEM, DEFENSE SYSTEM, AND INFLUENCES OF FUTURE COURT NEEDS. CONSULTANTS DESCRIBE THE PRESENT COURT WORKLOAD CAPACITY AND MAKE PROJECTIONS ON FUTURE COURT COSTS AND CASELOADS. A PUBLIC DEFENDER SYSTEM HANDLING HALF THE INDIGENT CASES WITH A COORDINATOR'S OFFICE APPOINTING PRIVATE ATTORNEYS TO THE OTHER HALF IS RECOMMENDED. ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS SUCH AS TOTALLY ASSIGNED COUNSEL OR PUBLIC DEFENDER SYSTEMS ARE DISCUSSED, AND PROJECTED BUDGETS ARE ANALYZED FOR THEIR COST-EFFECTIVENESS. APPENDIXES INCLUDE A COURT CASE ON APPOINTED COUNSEL FEES, AND OTHER STUDIES OF DEFENDER PROGRAMS....TWH
