In this video, culturally diverse children ages 5 through 12 discuss their personal experiences with violence.
Abstract
Some of the children, when asked about their personal knowledge of and experience with violence in their neighborhoods and schools, recount typical arguments that may include some shoving and hitting; others describe neighborhoods where gun fire and even killings have occurred. One boy had himself been hit by a stray bullet that penetrated his house. Some of the children express fear and anger about life in their neighborhoods, because they do not feel safe. When asked about the causes of violence, most children are mystified by what causes people to kill or attack another person. One child, however, offers the insight that kids use violence to become "famous," that is to build a reputation and show they can dominate others. When asked how they handle their anger, the children state that they talk it out, keep it inside, or take some time out to relax. Queries about their reactions when someone is violent toward them include using self-defense, talking their way out of the situation, walking or running away, and seeking help from an adult.
