EFFECT OF FINNISH APPROVED SCHOOLS AND JUVENILE PRISONS ON THE SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENT OF THE INMATES, BASED ON A STUDY OF OFFICIAL RECORDS OF 396 BOYS RELEASED FROM APPROVED INSTITUTIONS AND JUVENILE PRISON IN 1963-64.
Abstract
IN THIS REPORT THE AUTHOR SUMMARIZES HIS CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS WHICH WERE DRAWN FROM PRINCIPAL-COMPONENT ANALYSES AND REGRESSION ANALYSES. THE AVERAGE FOLLOW-UP PERIOD WAS SIX AND A HALF YEARS AFTER RELEASE. THE AUTHOR STATES HIS BELIEF THAT THE MOST USEFUL RESEARCH IS THAT WHICH TESTS EARLIER THEORIES; HIS OWN RESEARCH REFLECTS THIS BELIEF BY PRESENTING DATA AND CONCLUSIONS WHICH CONFIRM THE WORK OF EARLIER THEORISTS IN THE AREAS OF SOCIAL HEREDITY, MOTHER DEPRIVATION, GENERALIZED DISTRUBANCE, FAMILY-DELINQUENCY RELATIONSHIPS, AND ORIGINS OF DELINQUENCY. HIS GENERAL CONCLUSION IS THAT THE EFFECTS OF INSTITUTIONALIZATION ON A BOY'S LIFE ARE NOT SO GREAT AND DEAMATIC AS IS POPULARLY BELIEVED. RATHER, HIS DISTURBANCES ARE DUE TO SOCIAL AND FAMILIAL DEVELOPMENTAL FACTORS OF CONSIDERABLY LONGER DURATION. A FULL FINNISH TEXT OF THIS STUDY CONTAINS THE AUTHOR'S DETAILED RECOMMENDATIONS, INCLUDING A PROPOSAL FOR REFORMING THE SYSTEM OF PROTECTIVE EDUCATION IN FINLAND. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
