This article describes the technology and police uses of the TASER M26, which is used by over 2,500 law enforcement agencies in some level of deployment, and the new TASER X26, which is now in production and being shipped; financing the TASER is also discussed.
Abstract
When the TASER trigger is pulled, compressed nitrogen blows two plastic, protective doors away from the cartridge and shoots two metal probes or darts up to 15 or 21 feet, depending on the cartridge, while remaining attached to the gun on one end by thin, insulated wires. The probes affix themselves to the clothing or skin of the assailant, and an electrical jolt is sent from the gun down the wires to the probes. The shock overrides the assailant's motor nervous system, his or her muscles involuntarily contract, and he or she is incapacitated and falls to the ground. Total incapacitation takes less than a quarter of a second. The TASER is safe because it does not penetrate to vital organs or blood vessels, nor does it destroy nerves or muscles. The TASER M26 points and feels very much like a duty pistol, but has bright yellow striped markings. The M26 has been used successfully by many departments since it entered the market in December 1999. The TASER X26, being manufactured by TASER International, integrates a new technology called Shaped Pulse Technology, which makes it more effective and easier to use. The X26 sends the hardest pulse rate first for about 2 seconds and then pulls back to a lesser rate for the rest of the hit. This increases the effectiveness of the hit, enhances safety, and extends battery life. The X26 is lighter and smaller than the M26, and it has other features that make it easier to use. Law enforcement agencies should plan to equip all patrol officers with TASERS. The M26 retails for approximately $400 without holster or batteries, and the X26 retails for approximately $800, including a lithium energy source for up to 300 firings and the ambidextrous holster. Various ways to finance the purchase of these weapons are described.
