Abstract
THE LEGAL PROBLEMS OF THE DEAF ARE OFTEN MUCH MORE COMPLICATED THAN THOSE OF NORMAL PERSONS, AND THE LAWS THAT APPLY TO THE DEAF ARE OFTEN DIFFERENT. THE INITIAL SECTION OF THIS BOOK LOOKS AT COUNSELING PROBLEMS OF THE DEAF, DEAF PERSONS AS WITNESSES, METHODS OF TESTIFYING BY THE DEAF, AND INTERPRETER-RELATED CONCERNS. THE FOLLOWING SECTION FOCUSES ON CONTRACTS, BANKRUPTCY PETITIONS, REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS, WILLS, MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE, AND CHILD CUSTODY AND ADOPTION AS THEY PERTAIN TO DEAF PERSONS. THE CHAPTER ON INJURIES AND ACCIDENTS INCLUDES AUTOMOBILE, RAILROAD, AND EMPLOYEE ACCIDENTS, DAMAGES FOR DEAFNESS, PROOF FOR DEAFNESS, JURY INSTRUCTION, AND LIBEL AND SLANDER. 'CRIMINAL MATTERS' DEALS WITH CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITY, AND SPECIFIC CRIMINAL OFFENSES INVOLVING THE DEAF. THE FINAL SECTION COVERS INSANITY PROCEEDINGS AND GUARDIANSHIPS, DRIVING PRIVILEGES, JURY SERVICE, AND THE RIGHT TO HOLD PUBLIC OFFICE. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE FEDERAL INCOME TAX MATTERS, STATE TAX EXEMPTIONS, IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION, FEDERAL BENEFITS, STATE SERVICES, EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION, PRIVATE ORGANIZATIONS, AND LEGISLATIVE MATTERS. IN ADDITION, WORKMAN'S COMPENSATION, LAWS, UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION LAWS, AND STATE LAWS ON THE EDUCATION OF THE DEAF ARE REVIEWED. THROUGHOUT, APPROPRIATE JUDICIAL DECISIONS ARE CITED.
