This policing textbook features an examination of "linkage blindness," which refers to the lack of connection between theories of policing and police practice, as well as the inability to analyze information across or within agencies in the criminal justice system.
Abstract
Part I introduces readers to law enforcement's place within the criminal justice system, the origins of the policing profession, and traditional models of policing. The four chapters of Part I address law enforcement in a democratic society; the origins and development of law enforcement in England and the United States; traditional policing and police professionalization; and law enforcement under constitutional, criminal, and civil law. Part II covers core aspects of police work. Its four chapters address search and seizure, arrest, and interrogation; policing functions and units; patrol and traffic; and investigation and evidence collection. The three chapters of Part III discuss major challenges in policing, including corruption, use of force, discretionary decisionmaking, and multicultural policing. The three chapters of Part IV focus on community policing and problem solving, new technologies for crime analysis, and new standards for police recruitment. New to this second edition is an overview of local, State, and Federal law enforcement organizations, including a detailed description of governmental reorganization since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The chapter on technology and its role in law enforcement is also new to this edition. In addition, the discussion of the use of force has been expanded, and chapters have been reorganized to provide a more comprehensive understanding of legal issues related to policing. Appended information on law related to the use of the Army and Air Force as posse comitatus and the USA Patriot Act of 2001, a glossary, and a subject index
