Abstract
METHODS BY WHICH POLICE MAY SERVE ACCURACY OF NEWS REPORTING ON EVENTS IN WHICH THEY ARE INVOLVED IS EXPLORED. FORMAL AND INFORMAL STYLES OF COMMUNICATION WITH THE MEDIA ARE TREATED. DEALING WITH THE PRESS UNDER EMERGENCY CONDITIONS IS DISCUSSED. LEGAL RIGHTS AND LIMITATIONS OF THE PRESS IN GATHERING INFORMATION IS CONSIDERED ALONG WITH BRIEF SUMMARIES OF LIBEL AND SLANDER. A DETAILED DESCRIPTION WITH EXAMPLES IS OFFERED IN TREATING THE PREPARATION OF NEWS RELEASES BY POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS.
